Synchronous (online at same time)
When you want to be online at the same time with your class, or an individual, where you can see and hear each other, this is considered a synchronous event.
Examples are:
- class together online at same time for lecture or live discussions
- office time with a student
- drop-in hours for students to ask questions
Using Zoom for Synchronous
- Zoom allows you to create a virtual meeting space for you to meet at a designated time with all of your students. You set the date/time, and send them information to join you online.
- While you have your class together, you also have the option to share items on your screen for them to see. For example you could have your Canvas course showing, or a PowerPoint, anything on your computer, that you want to share help guide learning. You can also have them share something from their screen as you are conversing.
- You can also record Zoom sessions. This allows students to rewatch the lecture, and also allows for asynchronous learning for those that could not make the scheduled time.
Permission/Guideline for Recording Zoom Sessions
As discussed by VPI and deans, class sessions held in Zoom may be recorded if:
- Students are informed that sessions are recorded
- Students have permission to not share video and to stay muted (permission to turn their camera off)
- The recording is only shared within the Canvas site for the course with which it corresponds
