Asynchronously VS. Synchronously - What and Why?
Resources for the teacher: Panopto, Zoom, Some way to record video lectures-Quicktime. Youtube. Here is an overall outline of the steps you'll need to take.
- Setting up an intro module to introduce students to the computer platform: Screenshot, Is online learning for me, Asynch vs. Synch. Signing up for other resources-LinkedIn, etc. How to photograph or submit their work; i.e. will they need scanners or a googledrive, dropbox to submit their work? Maybe a list of materials they’ll need posted here instead of on the syllabus. Have the syllabus posted somewhere.
- A video showing them how to navigate the course whether that is in canvas, on a blog, google classrooms, whatever. Also a link to a help site.
- An online introduction-students will learn how to embed images, post, and create responses in the forum.
- Critical analysis before, Critique in the form of an online discussion between peers. Follow that up with a short video from you (the instructor) providing critique on their work.
- Finally, think of other ways to personalize the course. Stop TYPING SO MUCH. Record a 20 second video. You can say a lot in 20 seconds.
- Backwards…. Learning outcomes first, then figure out how to get them there.
- More exercises, less projects.
- Critical analysis practice_complete research and describe (design, formal aspects, technique)
- More steps in your projects:
- brainstorm and sketch (ideation)
- rough draft review: affirmation
- final draft: with online discussion/critique (Post, describe your work, respond to two of your peers that don't already have two responses). Ask your students to critique very specific things-from the learning outcomes.
Using TILT-Transparency in Learning is essential to online. Remember you are not there to answer WHY they are doing this work. describe what they are going to learn and why they are doing it. What the process or HOW they are going to do this. Post a page of examples showing them What the best examples will look like.
